Ok... so back to this bag. I have started this several times but I am going to start it once again. I am working on it once again. I have finished several of the flowers with no problem but after learning about how Muench Touch Me felts I am re thinking about my roses. I have made them with Cascade 220 Blood red but I think that the Touch Me would be awesome. Ok... if anyone has any questions please ask away! ~ Enjoy.

Hi everybody!!! Here are a couple of notes so I don't have to e-mail you all individually!

The Pattern:I DO NOT have extra copies of this pattern and I am no longer able to send the PDF of the pattern out. The reason is that this pattern is for sale and it is not fair to give it away to everyone. You can purchase back issues of Vogue Knitting from their website (all of the pattern info is on the right) and e-bay is always a good place to look!

Knitting Level: This is not a beginner's pattern. The trellis pattern is tricky and there is a lot of counting to do in regards to the decreases.

Other then that have fun and post any problems or questions you have here!!!

I have put this bag on the back burner for a long time now but because of a bunch of ladies wanting to get involved with the knit-a-long I am ready to pick my needles up again!!! I have one and a quarter sides done and I have made a little picture that helps with the decreases...I will post that ASAP! Thanks all for resparking my interests!

I finially got all my yarn!

After a long wait… I finially picked up the rest of my yarn last night.   I now have enough to start the basket.  I was missing the green to variegate my trellis.  I am so happy now that I can get back to my bag.  This will be a work in progress.  Here are my stats so far:

Needles: US#19 Long Straight  Rosewood for bag and US#19 Short Straight Rosewood for Roses and Leaves
Trellis Yarn: Lamb’s Pride Kiwi and Cascade 220 Heather Green (variegating both yarns at the same time)
Roses: Manos Flam and Cascade Blood Red
Background: Galway Black
Leaves:  Lamb’s Pride Kiwi and Cascade 220 Heather Green (mixing the 2 colors and doing some just by them selves)

I was going to do my bag in the round after reading Fmarr’s version in Knitter’s Review  but after looking at photo’s of those bags I think I am going to go with the original pattern.  Working in flat and seaming the sides.

I will post pictures once I begin again.

I forgot I had so many things I wanted to get done for my loved ones for the big holiday...well "Rose" (as I like to call her" has been put ont he back burner but not forever!

Progress on my bag

Ok… Progress on my bag is zero.  I am waiting on getting one more yarn before knitting anymore.  Once I began the bag with what I thought was all the yarn I needed with exception of the leaf color yarn, I discovered that the yarn I was going to use for the leaves I am actually going use the yarn varigatedin the trellis so I am going to have to wait until at least until the 11th of December when I can get enough of the yarn.  I have made 10 of the roses with Manos Flame and Cascade 220 but I am almost out of the Cascade 220 Red. Since they are variegated I did not worry about Dye Lot.  Once again this is another yarn that I will be picking up on my Yarn Adventure on December 11th.

Ok so about the Yarn Adventure:  Many of you might know or not know about this great little store in North Hollywood.  Well the Stitch Café is going to be having a Open House from 5 – 8 pm on December 11th.  Since the store is about 120 miles from my house we have decided to make it an adventure out.  Several of us will be venturing down to the store.  My main goal is to come home with Cascade 220 Heather Green and Cascade 220 Blood Red for my bag but who knows what else I will find down there.  Hey Sue, you should come to it.  I know that it is later in the day but we would love to see you there also.  Christy, Kelly and I are planning to be there at 5pm and then depending on the damage to our check book we will either be having Carls Jr or Olive Garden (like I said depending on the damage we do.  It seems that, that can happen so easily.

Well onward and forward… waiting for the yarn… ho hum I shall be a knitting fool once I get the yarn...

New Yarn for my Roses and Leaves

Well, I went to LA yesterday and spent most of my time lost in Beverly Hills and Hollywood but I did find the time to do a little shopping at my favorite yarn store the "Stitch Cafe". I went in to just get more of the red I needed for my roses and some type of green for my leaves but as usual I found so much more.

First I found Manos Del Uruguay in Flame and I am going to mix it with the Cascade 220 red that I have to make the roses varigated.

Second I found Cascade 220 Heather green which I am going to mix with the Lamb's pride to make the leaves. I think it will work just find.

The photo above shows what the reds look like mixed. I think I am going to like these....

Question: Roses and how to seam them

I started to make the roses last night for the bag and then looked at the way to roll it up into a Rose.  Well this would be another problem.  The exact words are

“Bind off all Sts. Roll the ruffle edge and seam TO cast on edge to form rose.”

So that’s exactly what I did was – I made the rose and binded off like it said but when it came to seaming it.  I seamed it along the side.  Like one petal to another petal because it did not say seam the cast on edge or something like that.  So was I wrong?  I don’t know.  So when I get the project back out most likely later today.  I am going to make another rose but this time I am going to seam it along the cast on edge.  And then felt the 2 different roses and see which one I like.  I will hopefully post pictures later this weekend.

I know that creative holds no boundaries and I do not have to follow the pattern just as is since there are some different views.

What do you think?  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Question: Top Section (Turning Ridge)

I have a question for you.  This afternoon I was talking and knitting with Kelly.  As I was working away knitting on my bag, I noticed that both Kelly and I did the tops different.  I decided to frog my work until I got home and figured out what I had done incorrectly. I wanted to go home and look at Sue’s picture on her post.

I was noticing that Sue, Kelly and I all did different tops of the bag.

Does anyone have any problem with the very beginning?  I think I might have messed up on the Turning Ridge.  Kelly and I looked at the difference between ours.  This much I have found out since this discovery today

Kelly, Sue’s and my top of the bag look different.  It appears to be at the Turning Ridge.  I actually ended up working a stocking knit at first and then once I did the turning ridge I was then working Stocking knit on the opposite side.

Simple Turning Ridge: Knit one row on the wrong side of the work to create a purl ridge on the right side of the work, which denotes the fold line.

But the way I read the instructions I ended up doing a reverse stocking knit.  Does anyone have a clue???

In the Beginning: The Start of KniTaPaLooZa's Bag

Ok you guys. I broke the bank today. I have been working on my Rose Bag on Size US19 – shorts. Which I have to say has been a little bit of a struggle. So last night I bought myself a gift. I bought a brand new set of Lantern Moon Teak Needles. I have had several pairs of them in the past but it seams that I have a dog that has expensive taste. He has only ever eaten my Lantern Moon Needles. So I fought with myself to not get the needles but I wanted to get going more on my bag… So I went a head and got them. Hopefully today I will have more of the bag done so I can show you all it. But here is what I have so far. I am up to Row 6 of the First set of Trellis. I am using Cascade 220 Pink for the Roses, Galway Black for the Basket and Lamb’s Pride Green for the Trellis. I only have to get one more color for the other leaves but that is a minor purchase. I think I am going to get another green in Lamb’s Pride but I am not worried about it.

Question if anyone can answer?

Rose Bag Progress . . . .

Boy, is this a brain exercizer! I did only one repeat the first night I worked on this and with no decreases. Not too bad. Last night I decided to pick it up again and did one repeat with a couple of decreases and then decided to keep going and do another repeat, with more decreases. WOW! After ripping out a few things a couple of times, I think I got it! Two more repeats to go on this half, with decreases, no less. How could they write a pattern and leave out vital information about how to alter the trellis stuff while doing the decreases??? I guess the challenge is good for the grey matter and keeps us on our toes. If this comes out when done, I'll sure be proud of it!!!

Glossary of instruction on stitches - In most magazines they will at the beginning of the patterns usually only one time each issue put a description or instruction on each stitch to be worked via the patterns. Like this pattern it explains how the increases and decreases are to be done on page 94 of the magazine. My Love is Like a...

Red, Red, Rose! I got bored today (I didn't want to start side two yet) so I made one of the flowers:

Well after sewing it together I discovered I made a stupid mistake (I was off on which were P and witch were K sts, duh!) So I made another one. I threw them in the washer...Because I just couldn't wait and now look what I have:

You can't tell the difference between the two! I think they look great!

Okay now to tell you all what I did for the decreases on the sides of the bag. I could not understand the description in the pattern so I had to go to my LYS and ask Janet what the heck I was supposed to do. Here is what we figured out.

Repeat #2:
Decrease on rows-
1 and 7

Repeat #3:
Decrease on rows-
1, 3, 5, and 9

Repeat #4:
Decrease on rows-
1, 3, 5, and 10

Repeat #5:
Decrease on rows-
1, 3, and 5

You will decrease one stitch on each side of the preceding rows. I suggest doing your decreases (K2tog) one stitch away from the outside edge of the work. I hope that helps everyone out!

PS: Sue I was the "Kelly" that sent you daughter Melissa her September Stitch Markers in the swap. The are the purple one's with the flowers!!! I just figured it out!

1 Side Done!

Well I have finished one side. This was so hard because you have to just guess when you need to take out one side of the trellis pattern. I have figured it out I think. I had left the outside leg off of one of the trellis triangles but I added one in after I was done because it looked off to me.

This is what it originals looked like. Do you see the gap on the center row on the outside edges...well I didn't like that look so I fixed it.

It still doesn't look perfect but I think that is as close as I am going to get!

measurements: (THIS THING IS HUGE)
Across top: 23"
Across Bottom: 16"
Height: 22"

Now to start the other side. I will post the repeat pattern tomorrow.

I am also new to this knit along, admiring the bag for a long time! I am anxious to get started, but need to select the yarn. I am going to my LYS this weekend, to check on Lamb's Pride Bulky--I am also considering the same yarn Susan is swatching. Any input would be happily considered! Black Yarn for swatching

I went to my LYS tonight and got some Mauch Chunky to swatch. I'm going to double it, and knit on 19s. We figured I'd need 6 balls to double it. It is comprable to Lamb's Pride bulky. They have all the colors I need, but I wanted to swatch before I made that BIG committment.

Here is a picture of what I have got so far:

Okay...I think it looks a little silly on the side; you see where the trellis doesn't branch out to the out sides. That is how it looks on the pictures that I have seen of the bag. Here is a very crudely drawn picture of what the bag should look like.

The arrow is where I am right now, I think (without looking) I am on row 5 of the third repeat. I know this is a really bad looking picture but this is what I have come up with. The trellis pattern is not hard...the decreases are a butt kicker!!! The pattern tells you where to decrease (kind of, thanks to Janet we figured it out) but it doesn't tell you how to decrease in the pattern, how to deal with the trellis while you are decreasing. I am trying to write what I am doing as I go along but this is tough.

I forgot to say that I am using size 17 needles. I started with these and I thought it looked pretty good. I didn't check the gauge but I think it will work.

Melissa: I think that the Lamb's Pride Bulky would work great. You may even get away with only doubling it, if you use the size 17 needles. I am really happy with the WOTA so far.

I found a mistake in row #6 this is how it should be:

Row 6: With A, p1 sl 1 wyif, *p1, p1 wrapping yarn twice, p1, p1 wrapping yarn twice , p1, sl 3 wyif; rep from *, end last rep sl 1 wyif, p1 instead of sl 3 wyif.

I will be sure to make a page with all of the corrections on it and put a link in the side bar.

I am now on the second repeat of the trellis pattern and the decreases are going to be a real pain but I will figure them out. I will be gone until Monday but I should be able to update the page still.

I JUST started the pattern and I already am having trouble. The pattern says:

With A cast on 50 sts and work ST st for 2', (I totally got that)
end with a WS row (this is what I don't get...The row I am at now I should purl next, is this right?)
K next row on RS for turning ridge. (What?)
Con't in St st for 1' more.

This is what I think it means. K a Row, P a Row, for 2'. k two rows, then K a row,P a row, for one more inch. Is that right?

Look What Came In the MAIL!!

I just got my first batch of yarn!!! I had to order it in two batches because I made a calculating mistake (I am an actor not a Mathematician !). Here is what my pallet looks like:

The only experience that I have doubling (I have never tried triple-ing) is with my Fiber Trend Clogs and they turned out pretty well. It is definitely going to take some trial and error....Probably more error!!!

Doubling or tripling yarn scares me

I need to buy yarn to do this lovely bag but frankly, the bag seems complicated enough that doubling or tripling yarn strands sends threads of terror through me. Y'all are brave (or just extremely experienced) to be doing that.

I did a kind-a-sort-a swatch today with some WOTA doubled on size 19's and I think I am going to hold it triple still. I could go down a needle size and use it doubled, but I would like to make the bag at big as possible!

I wish I would have read the other KAL a little more. I missed all of the good information. I’m sure the WOTA doubled would be fine; I would think that it would only make the bag a little smaller. I was only going to triple it because I was trying to get as close to the Baby’s Bulky weight. Maybe I can do a swatch and if the doubled yarn is about the same gauge I can send the extra yarn back or sell it on E-bay.

I've been thinking about what yarn to use - I know a few people here are using KPWOTA tripled. It is about the same gauge as Cascade 220, right? I remember reading in the previous KAL for this bag that someone had used 220 doubled and it worked fine....wondering if the WOTA would work just as well doubled (and would save a chunk o'change!) Any thoughts?

I have decided to use Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in: Coal, for the main part of the bag; Wheat, for the trellis pattern; Cherry Blossom, for the roses; and Grass, for the leaves. Here are the numbers that I have ordered, I am going to hold the yarn triple because it is worsted weight:

10 [23420] Coal Wool of the Andes
7 [23437] Cherry Blossom Wool of the Andes
2 [23439] Grass Wool of the Andes
7 [23441] Wheat Wool of the Andes

I know I will have extra of the "Wheat" color because I am not going to make leaves out of that color. I think I am going to be okay. I will be sure to do a swatch before I start!

These colors should look more like this picture by Elizabeth Ruuska:

I think her version of the bag (made with Lambs Pride Burly Spun) is one of the best looking ones that I have seen.
